Kai Blackwood is a New Haven, CT native where he was best known as the guitarist for underground alt-rock heavyweights, Gargantua Soul and as the front man for his own rock/punk trio, The Tokyo Death Squad. During a break from touring, Blackwood wrote a very personal, intense screenplay called "Riding With Medusa" and in August of 2007, he relocated to Hollywood, determined to make that film. Almost immediately upon his arrival in Los Angeles, Kai was cast as the sole subject of a very strange little documentary film called "Sell it to the Devil" which had a run on the festival circuit and secured nationwide distribution. Eager to prove himself as a filmmaker, Blackwood wrote/directed/scored & edited a short film in February, 2009 called "Cupcake". This creepy little ode to eternal youth earned a Bronze Remi Award at WorldFest Houston 2010 and a Gold Medal for Excellence in Park City Film Music Festival 2010. On the strength of "Cupcake", Blackwood was hired to direct and produce his first feature film, "Grey Skies". Shot on location in Clare, Michigan in 18 days, with seven main characters and a trio of alien creatures, "Grey Skies" was a challenging experience for the first time feature director. The production wrapped in October, 2009 and upon his return to Los Angeles, Blackwood wrote the theme music and cut a rough trailer for "Grey Skies". "Grey Skies" premiered at Arclight Theater on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood on June 29th, 2010 and subsequently screened at several festivals throughout the US. "Grey Skies" went on to win the Audience Choice Award at Shriekfest 2010 and Best Feature at Santa Fe Independent Film Festival 2010.
